I was a little intimidated when I first started making my own homemadebeauty products. I never thought of myself as a DIYer, but I realized how easy it was to make my own products once I started. And it’s a ton of fun!!

Learning how to make lip balm is one of the most straightforward beauty products you can make. It took me less than 5 minutes to make this recipe, and I made enough to last a year!

My 6-year-old daughter loves makeup and is always getting into my lip balms and mineral makeup. Unfortunately, most over-the-counter beauty products contain ingredients that are toxic and linked to reproductive abnormalities. I don’t worry about how my beauty products affect her becauseI make them myselfwith natural ingredients.

How To Make Lip Balm

What You’ll Need To Make Your Own Lip Balms:

  • Coconut Oil (solid, not fractionated)
  • Raw Honey ( This is an optional ingredient. You can use any honey, but raw is my favorite and contains antioxidants)
  • Sweet Almond Oil (you may substitute this with olive oil, avocado oil, or jojoba oil)
  • Essential Oils (optional)
  • Empty Lip Balm Tubes
  • Tin Lip Balm Container
  • Beeswax Pellets (or carnauba wax)
  • Double Boiler
  • Whisk
  • Funnel

Instructions:

Step one:Measure the coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and beeswax and pour them into a double boiler or glass bowl over a small saucepan filled with water.

Step two:Turn the burner on low heat and let the oils and wax melt entirely.

Next, remove from the pan from heat and stir in the raw honey (if using) and essential oils. I added 20 drops of lavender essential oil, but you can use your favorite oils or blends for this DIY lip balm.

About The Ingredients

Coconut Oil: Organic coconut oil is unlike any other skin product! Because of its low molecular weight and the method of binding to proteins, coconut oil can penetrate the skin more deeply than other products.

Sweet Almond Oil: This carrier oil contains fatty acids and vitamins A and E and penetrates quickly into the skin. It’s very moisturizing and perfect for dry or chapped lips.

Essential Oils: These plant-based oils are natural and safer than synthetic fragrances. But don’t go overboard; a few drops are all you need to scent homemade lip balm.

Beeswax: Beeswax is naturally hydrating and increases essential moisture in the skin. Commonly found in hand and body creams, beeswax helps to retain natural skin moisture.

Carnauba Wax: “Carnauba waxis obtained from of a species of sustainably grown palm known as the “Tree of Life” orCopernica cerifera. These indigenous trees flourish in northeastern Brazil and are a different species than the palms planted purely for their oil.The wax is derived from the leaf of this tree, and harvesting is done via manual pruning once a year, allowing the tree to continue growing for decades.” – Mountain Rose Herbs

FAQ & Substitutions

What can I use instead of coconut oil?

Mango butter, shea butter, or cocoa butter are both great substitutes for coconut in this DIY lip balm recipe.

Can you put raw honey in lip balm?

Yes, I have used raw honey in my homemade lip balm and it really moisturizes your lips!

What other essential oils can I use in this lip balm?

Peppermint oil and vanilla are a great combo (use vanilla extract if you don’t have vanilla essential oil)! I also love sweet orange essential oil for my lip balms.

The honey separated in this lip balm. Did I do something wrong?

I love adding raw honey to my lip balm and have done so many times. Unfortunately, some readers have said that the honey sunk to the bottom of their containers. I believe this is due to the type of honey used (raw vs pasteurized) and also how well the honey is mixed into the lip balm in step 4. You may leave it out completely if you do not wish to use it. This lip balm is still very good without it.

What ingredients do you need to make lip balm?

You only need 2-3 ingredients to make a basic lip balm. This recipe uses coconut oil, almond oil, beeswax, and essential oils. You can create your own blend for this recipe with just coconut oil and wax if you like. It’s really a versatile DIY that can be made various ways!

Can I use honey instead of beeswax for lip balm?

No, honey is not a suitable substitute for beeswax in homemade lip balm.
