Mack & Rita: The Main Characters Ranked By Likability (2024)

A 30-year-old woman trapped in the body of a 70-year-old is supposed to be a nightmare, but not for Mack. She felt out of place among her age mates and her dream years were the 70s, having life figured out and relaxing all day drinking wine and going to book club. was underwhelming as a comedy but still had a rich storyline worth following.

The comedy had a lot of lessons, especially for young adults who often feel left behind by fashion and other social and technological trends. The diverse cast was the best part of the film, with veteran actors such as Loretta Devine and Wendie Malick giving it a sweet vibe and lots of energy. The younger cast led by Taylour Paige also brought more life into the comedy, with lots of characters to love.

Stephanie

Stephanie was part of the pressure that forced Mack to seek a life outside her own body. While she only wanted to help her client make money, she was too social-media focussed for Mack. She thought being a writer wasn't classy enough and would only be satisfied with Mack getting something trendier even if she didn't enjoy doing it.

She also put Rita under too much pressure and caused most of the chaotic scenes in the film. The Pilates advice went horribly wrong despite her insistence, as did every other trendy project she proposed. She never really connected with either Mack or Rita on a personal level to understand them and know what they really wanted.

Luca

Luca's repurposed tanning bed did the most important job in the film although he himself didn't even understand it. He didn't get enough screen time either as he was only shown encouraging Mack to turn into Rita and also encouraging her to turn back to her old self.

It is not clear how his old machine managed to bring about the body swap, but he totally nailed the role of the clueless therapist. Despite always looking confused and appearing like a desperate con man, he was laughable and sweet.

Angela

The entire old girl gang was an amazing part of the movie, and Angela was the liveliest of them all. She seemed to have accepted herself better than the rest and looked like the exact opposite of Mack. Despite her age, she was still in love with social trends, taking selfies, and enjoying social media.

She was still motherly as she encouraged Rita to enjoy her wine party and also reminded her that missing the 40 most important years of her life wasn't a good idea. She also made a better influencer than Rita could ever be because she was truly young at heart.

Carol

Carol (Amy Hill) was the least talkative of Sharon's old girl gang but still sweet and motherly. She was content with her life, having it all figured out, and didn't seem to worry about her age and body. She encouraged Rita to love herself more and stop worrying about people's perception of her.

For some reason, she treated Rita as her daughter, which made Mack love her old self even more. She didn't get much screen time either, but she showed up for Mack/Rita in all the scenes and didn't freak out when she learned that Mack had been swapped into Rita's body.

Betty

Like Carol, Betty (Lois Smith) was one of Mack's dream accomplished grannies who didn't seem to lack anything. She didn't seem to have any pressure to conform either and looked more like the mother to the rest of the old gang than just a friend.

She was also understanding, taking her time to connect with Rita and still making Mack feel at home when she got her 30-year-old body back.

Jack

Jack was one of the characters that brought new life to the film, with a romantic gentlemanly vibe that complemented Mack, Rita, and Carla. His transformation from a lonely 40-year-old man that still loved his skateboard to Mack's supportive boyfriend made Jack the film's game changer.

He fell in love with Mack, even when she was trapped in Rita's body, and offered a level of understanding that Mack just couldn't get from her age mates. The best part was when he didn't seem to mind when Cheese urinated on his limited edition shoes. He seemed to fall for 70-year-old Rita and then ended up with her 30-year-old version which was strange but still interesting.

Mack

The whole film was supposed to be about her, but a lack of plot consistency caused Mack to disappear, as her best side didn't really come out. She struggled with everything about herself and just didn't seem alive in her own body. At the beginning of the film, Mack was always complaining and out of place, although she was good enough to admit what she wanted for herself to Carla.

The body swap was the game changer for her as she came back into her 30-year-old body transformed and more realistic than her earlier self. After leaving Rita's body, Mack became a lot more lively. She was so good that she connected with Jack romantically, something she didn't even try earlier. She was also more lively at her book reading, especially after kissing Jack.

Sharon

Carla couldn't connect perfectly with Rita as she did with Mack and that is where Sharon (Loretta Devine) came into the picture. She was always there for Rita, which created the support group that Mack always lacked. Sharon's support was so passionate, that she skipped a doctor's appointment to help Rita spy on Jack.

She was the bridge between Mack and Rita as she understood what it meant to be a 30-year-old that just couldn't fit into her world. She broke the news of the Mack and Rita body swap to the group and somehow got them to deal with it maturely and encourage Rita to go back to her real body.

Carla

Mack's partner in crime actually stole the show from her as she always appeared in the right place at the right time. From helping Mack get the right clothes to wear at a Bachelor party to perfecting the cover story to explain Rita's appearance and Mack's absence, Carla (Taylour Page) was the best half of the film.

Despite being more comfortable with herself than Mack, Carla understood Mack's struggles and helped humanize her character. She encouraged Mack to go for Luca's regression therapy to get back her original body even after the two had fought after Rita missed Carla's bridal rehearsal party. She was understanding, caring, and loyal, which are the characteristics you need from a best friend when you are struggling as Mack was.

Rita

Rita, played by Diane Keaton, was an unleashed version of Mack, full of life and willing to face challenges better than the 30-year-old was. She managed to go for what she wanted, including kissing Jack and expressing her feelings despite him appearing 30 years younger. She was adventurous but reasonable and easier to connect with than Mack. When she realized that Pilates was not good, she didn't hesitate to express it to the entire group of women.

Despite fears that she could lose herself forever, Rita knew what she wanted and was a lot more content with life. For the first time, she felt happy to express her fears to Carla as well as Sharon's group. She also stopped being concerned with pleasing everyone, which is the character trait that ruined Mack.
