‘One Piece’: Who Are The Seven Warlords Of The Sea? (2024)

‘One Piece’ is well known for its world-building system and plot line. The way Oda has demonstrated the power system in the animeverse is truly remarkable. From the very beginning, we get a clear picture of party distinction in the form of the Marines and the pirates. Our favorite character Luffy and his crew have fought and escaped dozens of times from the clutches of the Mariners.

However, that’s not where the division ends. Apart from Marines and Pirates, there are systems like the World Government, World Nobles, Seven Warlords of the Sea, and The Four Emperors. As we have seen in the Marineford arc, the Marines and the Warlords had to join forces in order to stop one of the Four Emperors. They are all crazy-powerful. In this article, we’ll take a look at the Warlords.

The Seven Warlords Of The Sea

7. Donquixote Doflamingo

‘One Piece’: Who Are The Seven Warlords Of The Sea? (1)

One of the most heinous characters in the series, and one of the most powerful ones. Doflamingo is often considered one of the most villainous villains of the series who is also the king of Dressrosa and a former Celestial Dragon. Just as as powerful he is, he is also an underworld dealer. He goes by his nickname Joker in these transaction deals. Then again he gets defeated by Luffy and loses his Warlord status.

6. Trafalgar D. Law

Law joins the Warlords only for his purpose. He never intended to maintain his status as a Warlord in the first place. To get into the position he delivers 100 hearts of pirates to the Marines. It was to show that he has no mercy towards pirates and wants to help the Marines (which was 100% a lie). It also demonstrated his enormous power as an individual. After he meets Luffy at Punk Hazard he joins forces with him, letting go of his position as the Warlord.

5. Buggy The Clown

‘One Piece’: Who Are The Seven Warlords Of The Sea? (3)

We got introduced to Buggy at the beginning of the series when Luffy beat the crap out of him. At Loguetown, they meet once again, but it isn’t until the Marineford arc that he joins Luffy’s cause and fights against the Marines to save Ace. His connection to Gold D. Roger was also revealed later on, which made the Marines offer him the Warlord position. He happily accepts it as it means he can live without the fear of getting caught.

4. Edward Teach ‘Blackbeard’

‘One Piece’: Who Are The Seven Warlords Of The Sea? (4)

One of the horrible villains in the series is Blackbeard. He plots the capture of Ace, gaining the title of Warlord from the Marines. All the way long his plan was to pitch Whitebeard against the remaining Warlords and the Marine Admirals to kill him and take in his power. After Whitebeard’s death, he consumes Whitebeard’s power and lets go of his title as the Warlord. When his ruse was up he left the scene with fresh new recruits under him (the ones he freed from Impel Down).

3. Edward Weevil

This comically powerful character claimed himself the son of Whitebeard. Weevil and his mother set out on a journey to claim Whitebeard’s legacy by killing all his remaining crewmates. He was offered a position as a Warlord, but even after that, his focus remained on wiping out the rest of Whitebeard’s crew. While he may be powerful it would be stupefying if he really is Whitebeard’s son (though I refuse to believe he is).

2. Dracule Mihawk

‘One Piece’: Who Are The Seven Warlords Of The Sea? (6)

One of the coolest characters in ‘One Piece’ and also a fan favorite. Mihawk is the strongest swordsman in the world who acknowledged Roronoa Zoro as his rival. He is a mysterious character but definitely a good one. He avoids war and tries to maintain his idle life. Being a Warlord didn’t stop him from helping Zoro when the latter got dumped there by Kuma. He helps train Zoro for 2 long years, even allowing him to rest in his castle.

1. Boa Hanco*ck

‘One Piece’: Who Are The Seven Warlords Of The Sea? (7)

Boa Hanco*ck more than being a Warlord is interested in being someone who can help Luffy. She is hopelessly in love with the would-be pirate king and has openly supported him. She risks her status during the Marineford arc when she encounters and fights against the Marines. Not only that, Luffy is hugely indebted to her as he allowed him to stay and train on their island for 2-year. She is often called the Pirate Empress as her beauty surpasses imagination.

4. Crocodile

Apart from the aforementioned ones, there are four notable characters who were Warlords in the past but lost their status either after fighting with Luffy or for some other reasons. Luffy defeated Crocodile during the Arabasta Arc and therefore lost his status. Furthermore, he was locked down in Impel Down and later joined Luffy’s force in the fight against the Marines.

3. Jinbe

‘One Piece’: Who Are The Seven Warlords Of The Sea? (9)

Jinbe becomes the underling of Big Mom, so it’s no wonder why he’s not on the Warlord list. Moreover, he was locked up in Impel Down with Ace and joined Luffy in the Marineford fight. He also helped Luffy regain his sanity after losing Ace. He later joins his crew as the 10th member of the Straw Hats Pirate.

2. Gecko Moria

‘One Piece’: Who Are The Seven Warlords Of The Sea? (10)

After getting defeated by Luffy, he still remains in his Warlord position and joins the side of the Marines against Whitebeard pirates. After the war concluded he was completely demolished by Doflamingo. Though he somehow manages to escape his death, his status as the Warlord is completely done with.

1. Bartholomew Kuma

‘One Piece’: Who Are The Seven Warlords Of The Sea? (11)

Kuma was a warlord and also an important piece of the World Government’s cruel experiments. After he helped Luffy’s crew at the Sabaody Archipelago he was punished by the government and turned into a complete robot with no emotions or will of its own. He was given to the World Nobles after that and became a slave to them. He not only lost his Warlord status but also his own being.
