Is today a good beach day in Ocean City, NJ? ›

Conditions for a day at the beach or pool are good. Be sure to wear sunscreen and UV-protective clothing when spending time outdoors.

A surf report, however, is not a 100 percent accurate maritime weather forecast tool. Instead, surf reports represent interpretations of data collected over time from a given surf spot, and so each surf report site will have tuned the weather algorithms it uses to make sense of its prevailing conditions.

Drinking alcohol on the beach or in public is strictly prohibited.

In addition to our famous boardwalk, our ten-mile stretch of beach and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean are free and open to the public from 5 AM to 12:00 Midnight. Ocean City also wants to ensure the safety of all beach visitors during beach maintenance.

Surf forecasts often display wind direction in degrees/bearing. Surfing is usually best when it's wind-free. A surfer values glassy conditions―a calm surface of the water without gusts of wind―the most, but tough surfers learn to manage even the worst conditions.

Generally speaking the perfect size for beginners is 1 to 2ft. For intermediates: 2-4ft waves are best as it gives you more face of the wave to progress your skills on. You should keep an eye on the 'Swell Period', because it's a lot more indicative of the actual wave size (see the next point).

But generally for surfing, you want light offshore winds under 15mph for clean, groomed waves. Anything more than that (say, a gusty offshore wind over 25mph) will make it harder to paddle into waves and, on weaker swells, harder to generate speed on the waves.

Tsunamis are usually caused by earthquakes but can be triggered by weather, landslides, volcanic activity, and meteorites. There have been two recorded tsunami events in New Jersey, according to the NOAA. The first tsunami event happened in 1938 and the second in 1944. A “very doubtful tsunami” hit New Jersey on Sept.

Beach hours

Beaches are not open 24 hours. Most beaches are open from 6 a.m. – 10 p.m., except in Ocean City and Seaside Heights, where they are closed to the public from 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Most beaches are guarded starting in June until Labor Day. Don't hesitate to test the waters at every one of our lifeguarded beaches and enjoy a refreshing dip.
