How to solve Vermilion City gym puzzle? ›

To open the door that leads to Lt. Surge, you need to hit two hidden switches located in the buckets in this room. The switch locations are random, so all you can do is search all the buckets until you find the first switch, then look for the second one right next to it. If you mess up, you need to start over.

There are many items hidden in this ship and plenty of opportunities to level up your Pokémon and get cash by fighting trainers, so don't make the mistake to rush right through to the Captain. Because once you're there, the ship will leave and never come back.

Head to Route 11 after defeating the Vermillion Gym boss.

You'll be traveling through a large cave on your journey to Celadon City, and the Flash ability will make getting through the cave much easier. Route 11 lies to the east of Vermillion City.

Surge's Gym. He's an Electric-type master, so Ground-type Pokémon like Geodude, Onix, or Diglett (from the nearby Diglett's Cave) will work brilliantly. Larry uses normal-type Pokémon, which only have one weakness: fighting-type moves. His pocket pick, Staraptor, is particularly grating because the flying-type moves it knows will counter your fighting-type Pokémon. There are no other counters for normal-types, so just avoid using grass- or fighting-types against it.

You can prevent the S.S. Anne from leaving after you receive Cut by having your whole team faint.

Skipping the S.S. Anne. In Generations I and III, if the player did not obtain the HM01 (Cut) yet but already has a Pokémon with Cut (such as a Pokémon traded from another game, or a glitch Pokémon), they may skip the S.S. Anne and continue the game normally.

Where do I go after I beat Vermillion City gym? ›

Head up to Cerulean and use CUT to proceed east via routes 9-10. Head thru Rock Tunnel into Lavender Town, then west via an underground tunnel to Celadon City.

You can get the pokéflute from Mr Fuji after you complete the Lavender Tower bit (with the rockets. and with the encounter with the Restless Soul of Cubone's Mother*). After that, play it near snorlax to initiate the fight. If it faints it will return to the mountains with a yawn and move aside.

Is that final empty spot in your Fire Red Pokedex taunting you? That spot belongs to Mew, and unfortunately there is no longer a way to catch one legitimately, as Mew was an event Pokémon only distributed during Nintendo events. The only way to get Mew these days is to trade, or to use a code.

Snowpoint City Gym has a slightlu tricky puzzle: you need to destroy the large snowballs that are in your way by sliding into them, using the slippery ledges of the Gym to get up enough speed. Note that you can't use the steps, as those slow you down.

Vermilion Gym lock puzzle

The idea is that you search the trash cans for electric locks, and you have to find two in succession to open the doors to Lt. Surge. Once you find the first one, the second one is supposed to appear in any adjacent trash can, even one you might have already searched.

The trainers in this gym all use Electric types, so be sure to bring your best Ground or Ground/Rock types along. Think Diglett, Geodude, Sandshrew or their evolutions. The easiest way to take out all the -mites, -orbs or -chus in this stage is to use your Dig technique over and over.
